New Zealand Property owners, when looking to renovate or alter their roof in any way, find themselves asking many of the same questions when it comes to metal roofing – namely, what the lifespan of a metal roof is, and whether it’s worth investing in! Everyone wants a roof that lasts with minimal maintenance; it’s the cost-effective and attractive choice for any home or business.

Luckily, at IG Roofing, we have quite the experience in architectural metal roofing, and answer this question in detail, below.

So, how long will my metal roof last?

Generally, metal roofing can last an average of 50 to 75 years in New Zealand. Of course, that’s the quickest answer! There are different metal roofs on the market, and some age faster than others. Aluminium, copper, zinc and steel roofing all age at similar rates, but this can depend on how susceptible they are to corrosion and weather damage.

Take a look at their lifespans in more detail, here:

  • Steel or Galvanised Roofing: A galvanised steel roof can last anywhere between 40 to 50 years because they’re highly durable and weather resistant, but they can corrode and rust under the right conditions. Always carry out maintenance where necessary to keep your galvanised roof looking as beautiful as it does upon installation. Rust can be treated when caught soon enough!
  • Aluminium Roofing: Aluminium roofs are highly resistant to corrosion and retain their visual appeal for a large amount of time, lasting around 50 years or more – as expected of a high quality metal roof!
  • Copper Roofing: Copper roofs are a rare example of metal roofing with unfathomable longevity. Because they oxidise over time and develop a protective patina, they can last a minimum of 50 years, but can easily exceed 100 years of life or more. This roof is a lifelong investment, and one that you’re sure to be happy with.
  • Zinc Roofing: Much like a copper roof does, zinc roofing develops a lovely protective patina over time. This enhanced durability also increases its lifespan to between 60 to 100 years. Certainly, zinc roofs look stunning, and easily withstand a number of different weather conditions without damage.
